Power profile management tool for PC

Power Saver is a free utility tool for PC made by an independent developer named Denis Blank. This open-source program lets users manage the power plan settings in their PCs. With it, they can have the operating system's performance profile dynamically change depending on various conditions they set.

Building upon the Power Settings feature built into Windows, Power Saver adds much more control over performance parameters that the native function does not offer. Depending on the number of processes running and processing power needed, the PC can ramp up and wind down automatically without much input from users.

Fine-tune your power plan

A power plan is a set of system and hardware settings that you can configure to dictate how your PC uses power for various functions and tasks. It's a simple concept, but when the feature was introduced in Windows, it enabled users to fine-tune the performance of their computers on a more granular level. This was especially handy for laptops as it helped conserve battery life.

While it was a handy addition to the OS, you had to manually switch between plans if you needed more or less power. This is where the portable Power Saver utility can help. It will still let you jump between Power Saving or Balanced profiles, but it also comes with an Auto function. It's a set and forget fare since it will check running processes and dynamically adjust for you.

You can configure Power Saver yourself, though, via its config file. On this part, you'll probably encounter a slight learning curve if you're not too familiar with setting up a program in this manner. Also, there is no graphical user interface here since the utility runs and can be operated straight from your system tray. This can be a plus or minus depending on the type of user you are.

Dynamic power

In summary, Power Saver takes the already handy power settings function in Windows, and just makes it better by automating the process of switching between profiles for you. It's portable and can be quickly accessed straight from your system tray. A GUI and an easier way to configure the utility would have been great for beginners. Nevertheless, it's a useful tool to have around once you get used to it.

PROS

  • Lightweight and portable
  • Accessible and operated via the system tray
